SPN21 Will Stir Up Students’
Creativity By James Kon
Bandar Seri Begawan
- The Ministry of Education is actively preparing for the
implementation of the new system of education in Brunei Darussalam
known as the "National Education for the 21st Century".
The SPN21 (Sistem Pendidikan Negara
Abad 21) will bring significant and drastic changes in terms of
curriculum and assessment, as there will be a more pronounced
pre-technical course in the general school curriculum called
"Applied Programme".
This observation was made by Acting
Minister of Education Pg Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Mohammad bin Pg Hj
Abd Rahman during the launching of the national conference and
workshop on design and technology at the Orchid Garden Hotel
yesterday morning.
"Many educational institutions in the
world today prepare their students for individualised learning and
problem solving (because these are essential for businesses and
industries)" he said, adding that this form of education can be very
demanding. "We need to prepare our youth to meet the challenges that
lie ahead."
In light of this, it is necessary to
introduce design and technology in the country's education system at
the primary level, said the acting minister.
Education in design and technology will
also equip students with the know-how of creating new products, and
they will be able to specialise in various fields such as textile,
food, woodwork and electronics, he added.
In this context, the Ministry of
Education is seen as a primary agent to generate human resource
development, which is in line with the National Development Plan as
specified in the "Wawasan Brunei 2035" vision.
Meanwhile, the Co-chairman of the
Organising Committee, Awang Hj Suhai la bin Hj Abdul Karim, pointed
out that that the implementation of the new education system is
important, as it helps in the development of students'
problem-solving skills and creativity.
Earlier, a keynote address was
delivered by Andrew Mitchell who touched on the problems, issues and
future trends of "D&T" (design and technology) in the UK
national curriculum.
